Fender American Precision Bass

Fender American Precision Bass 3-Tone Sunburst Maple Fretboard
Fender American Precision Bass

The American made Fender Precision is probably the most popular bass to date. It's been used on countless recordings by a number of top bass players: Jack Bruce, Chris Squire, Pete Mosley, and Dusty Hill. It was actually invented before the Stratocaster back in 1951. The body is made of solid Alder or Ash in the classic P-Bass body style. The type of wood used depends upon the finish of which there are a number of: Black, Butterscotch (shown), Chrome Red, Silver Chrome, 3-tone Sunburst, and Sunset Orange. Ash wood is used on the transparent Sunset Orange basses.

The 34 inch scale length maple neck is reinforced with graphite in the modern 'C' shape. By graphite I mean the neck has graphite rods (Posi-flex TM) located in the neck. These two rods help to reduce neck warping caused by climate changes or improper storage. Basically they are two maple dowel rods that have been wrapped in a graphite cloth. The neck has either a rosewood or maple fretboard (glued on top of the maple neck). There are 20 medium jumbo frets which is how it's been for quite a while. The fretboard have been smoothed to give the neck a great feel. This smoothness is what naturally happens after years of playing. They wear down the very small protrusions that come out of from the neck.

One new feature is the Stealth Switching. Fender calls it the S-1 switch and it's located on the volume knob. If you pull it up then the single coil pickup is connected in series and gives you a brighter more 'snappy' tone (its thinner sounding). With the switch down it's like a normal split-single coil pickup.
