Fender Standard Stratocaster
The Fender Stratocaster Standard is probably the least expensive ways
to get a real Fender. This guitar for the most part was completed in
the Fender Ensenada, Mexico plant. The guitar body may have been made
in Corona California or even the neck or other part of the guitar,
but it was assembled in Mexico. The American version of this guitar
is about twice the cost and it will have the word 'American' in the
title.
From what I can tell the Mexican strats are just as good as the American
made ones. I've found the finishes on the American made strats better.
If you are looking for a great guitar to play then get this one, a
Standard Strat. On the other hand if you are looking to collect guitars
then get an American Stratocaster. They will hold their value and only
go up in price.
The body of the Mexican version is made of Alder which is most common
in Fenders. It's a lighter weight wood that has no real grain to speak
of but sound bright and punchy for guitars. The 3-ply white pickguard
is standard. The bridge is the vintage style synchronized tremolo again
what you would think you'd find. The body has a Polyester finish as
opposed to a polyurethane finish. It's the same great Strat body in
size, density and shape. It quite possibly was actually made at the
Corona plant and then sent to be assembled in Ensenada.
The neck feels just a good as the American made ones. Very smooth
and even especially around the edges of the neck. It's made of Maple
with a Rosewood fretboard with a Satin polyurethane finish. There are
21 Medium jumbo frets with a scale length of 25.5 inches. The nut width
is 1.65 inches with a radius of 9.5 inches which makes great for either
lead or playing chords. The necks profile is the 'C'-shape which means
it’s thin and easy to play. The thinner necks are easier to play
but don't have as much tone and sustain. The 'C'-shape neck is the
most popular among guitarist today, mainly because it's easier to play.
The machine heads are Fender/Ping standard die cast sealed tuners.
They're great and keep the guitar in tune.
The electronics and pickups are your basic strat. It has three single
coil pickups with ceramic magnets. They sound great for both lead and
rhythm playing. The controls are one master volume and two tone controls
with a 5-way pickup selector: bridge, bridge+middle, middle, middle+neck,
and neck.
