Fender American Deluxe Telecaster with S-1 Pickup Switching |
||
The American Deluxe Telecaster® is a part of Fender's American Deluxe Series guitars and was first introduced in January of 2004. It features the famous Telecaster body; S-1 pickup switching, Tortoise Shell Binding, ‘C’ Shaped Neck, 22 Medium Jumbo Frets, Samarium Cobalt Noiseless Tele Pickups, and Chrome plated Brass Saddles. The main differences between this guitar and the American Deluxe Ash Telecaster are: the body is made of Alder and not Ash, Tortoise shell binding around the body, the neck profile is the more modern ‘C’ shape and not ‘U’ shaped, the neck is available in either rosewood or maple, snap in tremolo bar (not screw in type), and the neck doesn’t have a vintage tint. The main differences between this guitar and the American Standard Telecaster are the American Standard Telecaster has the following: Micro-Tilt™ adjustment neck, bent steel saddles with elongated string slots, thinner undercoat, Bi-Flex truss rod system, ’52 style body radius, Delta-Tone Circuit, and Alnico V pickups. It doesn’t however have the S-1 pickup switching, Samarium Cobalt Noiseless Tele pickups, binding around body. When trying to determine which one is for you remember some guitarists like things simple (American Standard) while others want more sounds (American Deluxe). The body is made of premium Alder with a contoured back and polyurethane finish. It’s available in 3-Color sunburst, Olympic Pearl, Aged Cherry Burst, and Montego Black. There is Tortoise shell binding around the top of the body as well. The pickguard is standard 8 screw type who’s color and ply depend upon the finish color. It’s 3-Ply Mint Green with the 3-Color Sunburst, 4-Ply Brown Shell on Olympic Pearl, 4-Ply Aged White Pearloid on Aged Cherry Burst and 1-Ply Beveled Gold Vinyl on Montego Black. The 25.5 scale length neck is made of maple with the more modern ‘C’ shaped neck profile. The fretboard is either rosewood or maple and has 22 medium jumbo frets. One thing about the neck is it’s finish. The top of the fret board is finished in high gloss polyurethane while the back of the neck is the smoother feeling satin finish. The radius of the neck is the standard 9.5 inches. The tuning machines are Fender/Schaller deluxe staggered die-cast and sealed machineheads. The position markers are Abalone dot inlays. The electronics and pickups are one of the things that make this guitar really stand out. The electronics consist of a volume and tone control but also includes the S-1 switching system and Master No-Load Tone Control. The S-1 switching system allows the guitar to get 4 basic tones (6 total but two repeated). The pickup selector is a 3-way of which two positions have the same wiring. With the volume control in the up position the pickups are wired as follows: Neck, Neck+Bridge (Parallel), Bridge With the volume control in the down position the pickups are wired as follows: Neck, Neck+Bridge (Series), Bridge The main tonal variation is how the two pickups are mixed together. The series is more powerful while the parallel has a more filtered but interesting sound. The master no-load tone control means that the tone control circuit is completely bypassed when turned up, or full tone. This means the guitar’s signal isn’t being loaded down by the capacitor so you get the maximum amount of output and tone. The pickups are Fender Samarium Cobalt Noiseless™ (SCN) types that where designed by Bill Lawrence. They are pretty amazing in that the noise performance is fantastic without changing the tone of the Telecaster. The design includes a combination of traditional magnets and Samarian Cobalt magnetic material. Each pickup also has two single coils where one coil is used to cancel out hum and noise only. It still sounds like a Fender single coil pickup but with much less noise. Features
