Jackson DKMG Dinky 6-String Electric Guitar

 DKMG Dinky
DKMG Dinky

Introduced in Jan 2001 the Jackson DKMG Dinky is a 6-string electric and is a part of the MS Series. The MS Series guitars are manufactured in Japan and have many of the same specs as their Pro series but come with EMG pickups. It features a sculpted archtop body with flame maple top on the transparent finishes. It also features an EMG high output humbuckers used by many famous guitarists as well as a Floyd Rose Pro Tremolo.

The neck of the guitar features a compound radius which is more curved at the nut (near the tuners) and becomes less curved or more flat at the point where the neck meets the body. The compound radius allows you to play chords easier on the frets closer to the nut and then gradually gets flatter as you go up the neck towards the body. The flatter neck radius is better for playing lead notes which is usually what you are playing when you are up that high on the neck. The actual radius of the neck at the nut is 14 inch. It then gradually becomes larger at the upper end of the neck to a radius of 16 inches. The neck thickness also gets larger as you go up the neck. At the nut it’s about 11/16th of an inch and goes up to 13/16th of an inch at the 12th fret.

The 25.5 inch scale length neck is made of Rock Maple and is connected to the headstock via a hardly visible scarf joint. One of the more unique features of the guitar is its reverse pointed headstock. Most Jackson headstocks point down while this one points up, hence reversed. The tuners are 6-in-line across the headstock. There’s also an Ivoroid binding around the neck and headstock as well. The fretboard is made of rosewood and as mentioned has a compound radius with 24 Jumbo frets. There are also MOTO ‘Piranha Tooth’ inlays. The tuners are Jackson sealed die-cast tuners. The neck is, as are every Jackson guitar I’ve played, very smooth and easy to play.

The body is made of Alder with a Flame Maple top on the transparent colors. The Maple top guitars seem to have a little more bite or attack to them. There is an Ivoroid binding around the body. It’s available in solid and metallic finishes: Black, Black Forest, Cobalt Blue, and Satin Black. It’s also available in transparent finishes: Transparent Black, and Transparent Red. This guitar also features as mentioned a Floyd Rose® JT580 bridge and locking tremolo. There are 3 hex bolts at the nut of the neck that when tighten stop the strings from going out of tune. The string spacing on this version is slightly less than the original. You’ll also notice that there isn’t a pickguard.

The electronics are pretty straight forward with a master volume and master tone controls and a 3-way pickup selector. The real deal is the EMG® 81 bridge pickup and the EMG® 85 neck pickup. These are high output passive pickups that are meant for metal playing. The EMG81 was designed for lead playing and has a u-shaped structure and ceramic magnets. This combination gives the pickups sound plenty of attack while remaining thick. It has a very consistent sound with plenty of sustain as well as a breakup that fades smoothly. It’s also one of their quieter pickups which really help when you’re playing at high volumes. The rhythm pickup is an EMG-85 which is actually a higher output pickup but has a different frequency response. The pickup uses Alnico magnets and a large opening which gives lower end boost as well as a thicker/fatter sounding high end. This works great for blues, rock, and hard rock playing because it has a more natural sounding tone. The mid-frequencies are clearer and not muddy. This pickup produces a natural sounding distortion than that of the EMG81. This is the same pickup combination used by Zakk Wylde.
