Squier Vintage Modified Stratocaster |
|
The Squier Vintage Modified Strat was first introduced in Jan 2007. It combines both the appeal of vintage style and hot-rodded modifications. Some features included are Duncan Designed SC-101 single coil pickups, Indian Red Cedar body, a gloss-finished maple neck, rosewood fretboard, and Vintage Style Tremolo, Custom Pickguards by Color, Gold and Black Squier Logo, Engraved Neckplate, White Plastic Parts, and Dot Position Inlays. The body is made from Indian Red Cedar (most are made of Agathis or Basswood). It’s available in 3-Color Sunburst, Olympic White, Metallic Red, Cherry Sunburst FMT, with a polyurethane finish. Each body color has a different pickguard with a 3-ply black found on the 3-Color Sunburst, 4-ply tortoise shell found on the Olympic White, 4-ply Red Shell found on the Metallic Red, and a 3-ply Parchment on the Cherry sunburst. You may have noticed that the Cherry Sunburst has a Flame Maple Top which looks absolutely stunning. The 25.5 scale length neck is made of maple with a polyurethane finish. The neck profile is the very popular ‘C’ shaped profile. There are 21 medium jumbo frets. Most strats have 22 frets but in keeping with the vintage name there are only 21 frets like that found on the earlier strat versions. Though to be more accurate the neck radius would have probably been 7.25 inches instead of 9.5 inches. It has a rosewood fretboard which works well for most players. There are white dot inlays at the position markers. On the headstock you’ll find a gold and black Squier Logo. The machineheads are the standard die-cast tuners that work well at keeping the guitar in tune. Of course if you use the tremolo a lot then the guitar will go out of tune. As for the tone it had plenty of low end and was a little brighter sounding than I thought. The Indian Red Cedar lends to a warmer tone but with plenty of attack while the SC-101 have a slightly more aggressive single coil tone with a mid-range boost as compared to AlNiCo 2 single coils. Seymour Duncan designed the pickups and are a cross between their SSL2 Vintage Flat and the SSL6 Custom flat models. They use Alnico V magnets and are bright and have plenty of chime. Each pickup has been calibrated for it’s position, neck, middle, and bridge. The middle pickup has been reverse wound for hum and noise cancelling when the 5-way pickup selector is in positions 2 and 4. In those positions the Vintage Modified Strat has exceptional “quack”. Alnico V magnets lend for a more aggressive tone. The controls are fairly standard with 3 knobs: volume, Tone (Neck Pickup), Tone (Bridge Pickup). The Bridge pickup doesn’t have a tone control in keeping with the Vintage styling. The 5-way pickup selector is one of the hot-rodded appointments. It has the three normal pickup tones plus two that are hum and noise canceling: Position 1. Bridge Pickup Features
