Vox NT15H Night Train Amp |
|
The Vox Night Train is a low power all tube guitar amp for the professional guitarist. It features an all tube design, 12AX7 Preamp tube, EL-84 Power Amp tubes, Dual Power Amp modes (Pentode, Triode), Master Volume, 3-Band EQ, Bright or Thick Switch, and an Industrial Mirror Finish. The great thing about this amp other than its tone is its dual-power mode. It has a pentode/triode switch that allows you get 15 watts or 7.5 watts out of the two EL-84 Pentode tube. The EL-84 is a pentode tube and has the basic four elements, cathode, plate, grid, and filament along with two other elements, screen grid and suppressor grid. In pentode mode you get about twice as much output power and a more aggressive tone. While in Triode mode you get a warmer and softer sound. This amp plugged in to a single Celestion G12M (Greenback) and you’ll get both tube and speaker break up. With a 4x12 cabinet you’ll get more bass and loudness. Using a single closed backed G12M the aggressive tones really came through while an open backed 2x12 cabinet worked well for clean tones. The 3-Band EQ is made up of Treble, Middle, and Bass controls. There is also a BRIGHT or THICKNESS switch. The BRIGHT switch boosts the upper frequencies while the THICK switch adds more gain for a beefier tone. One thing is it’s either one or the other. The 3-Band EQ allows for a lot of musical variation tone wise. From clean to aggressive it sounds great. The amp is housed in an industrial chrome metal with a mirror finish. On the top of the amp is a padded carrying handle. The amp weighs 17 pounds which is mostly from the two transformers located on either side of the amp. The Night Train can be used with 8 or 16 ohms speaker cabinets. There are two ¼ inch jacks on the back panel. I don’t know what the load would be if you plugged a cabinet in to both jacks. Features
