The Roland Fantom XR is the rackmount version of the Roland X8 synth. It's a polyphonic synthesizer and sampler that have 128 voices. It's made for professional and amateur musicians alike. It has a wide variety of sounds and can be used for all types of music from blues (organ, electric piano) to jazz, and of course all forms of electronic music. It doesn't have a keyboard, or large LCD screen or Dynamic Pads but it is cheaper and doesn't require very much space. There's a lot of sonic power in this rack mount synth. It 128MB of onboard samples and sounds (wave forms) that are stored in ROM. The rack version allows up to 6 SFX sound expansion cards (X keyboards only allow 4). This really expands the number of sounds that are available. You can store samples and onto a SmartMedia card. The XR supports up to 1 gigabyte SmartMedia or CompactFlash using a PC card adapter. It stores the samples as either WAV or AIFF files and you access the data via USB. Both Mac and PC (Windows) computers are supported. As with the other X-Series Fantoms the XR allows you to create sounds that consist of 4 programs. These programs can be layered or played at the same time. You can set each sound to be triggered through MIDI velocity and other means. It's a very versatile machine. Each voice/program used in a sound takes up (1) voice out of the 128 voices that are available. This means that if you had a sound that was using 4 voices you would have a total of 32 voice polyphony available. The Fantom series sound just fantastic and is easy to create sounds. The Rack mount version doesn't have the large color LCD screen which is it's only drawback. This is also why it's cheaper (as well as no keyboard). As mentioned it comes with 128MB of waveform ROM that include brass, violin, viola, string bass, oboe, clarinet and other woodwinds, drums, and other sounds). Roland's added the 88-key split piano which is a stereo sampled acoustic piano. They recorded stereo samples at a number of keys on the keyboard. It uses a real-time stretch algorithm to playback waveform samples. This is one of the things that make the keyboard sound really good. The XR has USB port from which you save and retrieve samples from the SmartMedia card in the form of AIFF or WAV files. The USB port can also be used for sending MIDI communications. It's also a Sampler - It operates at a fixed sampling frequency of 44.1kHz. You can sample directly into the keyboard via two 1/4" line level inputs located on the backside of the keyboard. This way you can sample from analog sources like your electric or acoustic guitar, microphone, and other sampler. It comes with 32 MB of sample ram which can be upgraded to 544 MB of ram. Off course it comes with (3) built-in studio digital effect processors and mastering tools. Some of the effects included are reverb, chorus, delay, EQ as well as COSM guitar amp modeling, Lo-Fi processing, tempo-synced delay, Slicer, Isolator, multiple effects chains and more. Features
