AKG C 1000 Condenser Microphone |
|
The C-1000 S is a small diaphragm (about 1/2 an inch in diameter) cardioid/hypercardioid condenser mic made for recording acoustic instruments such as Piano, Acoustic Guitars, Drum Overheads, and just about any other instrument. It requires phantom power to operate but comes with a 9V battery or it can use phantom power from your mixer or preamp. An interesting thing about this mic is the way you change it from a cardioid to a hyper-cardioid. This is done by placing a black plastic cap on top of the mic capsule. The cap has small holes in it as well as has a piece of foam rubber. The Hyper-Cardioid polar pattern means the mic is more directional and is less sensitive to sounds coming from the sides. You can really hear the difference when used with a pa or monitoring speakers. Installing the black cap only requires un-screwing the wire mesh screen from the base and placing the cap on top of the mic element. The frequency response is 50Hz to 20kHz but comes with an attachment that will boost the upper mid range frequencies. You can also change the frequency response of the mic by again placing a different black plastic cap on top of the mic element. The PB 1000 presence boost attachment is installed by unscrewing the wire mesh top and then pressing the plastic attachment on to the top of the mic element. One thing worth noting you can not use both attachments. This means you can only use the presence boost attachment in the cardioid polar pattern, or the hyper-cardioid pattern. So you can have either one or the other but not both. With the PB1000 presence boost installed gives you more upper mid frequencies (5kHz to 9kHz) by +5dB which gives better performance for dialog/speech intelligibility. Again its not anything fancy or electrical but rather a piece of plastic. The C1000 has a maximum SPL (Sound Pressure Level) of 137 dB. It also sounds great for a room mic or for event recording, which means you can use it to record concerts for example. The mic's pickup (transducer) comes with an internal capsule shock mount to reduce handling and cable noise. It comes with a plastic Polar Pattern Converter which changes the cardioid pattern into a hyper-cardioid (more directional) pattern. The hyper-cardioid polar pattern has better feedback rejection as it narrows the focus of the mic. In this pattern it also rejects sounds coming from the sides. The C1000 operates on either a 9Volt battery or on phantom power. Normal battery life is about 110 hours for standard batteries and longer when alkalines are used. The 9volt battery operation makes it a great on-location mic. The mic has an on/off switch so you can turn it off when not in use. This will save the batteries as well as disable the mic. This is helpful if you want to leave the mics plugged into their cables while at the same time making sure that nothing can come through. The switch is recessed into the body of mic so you can't accidentally turn it off. The battery is disabled when phantom power is supplied. To connect to the C1000 a common 3-pin XLR microphone cable is required. With a large frequency response range 50hz - 20kHz you can be sure of hearing everything. Features
